Yasothon: A Hub for Thai Chinese Culture
Yasothon, Thailand is the capital of Yasothon. Its first name was “Ban Sing Kow”. The town is significantly influenced by Thai Chinese culture.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Yasothon is during the months of December through February, for the perfect weather. Peak tourist season is usually during the months of January, February, and April. Tourists are least likely to visit in August. The famous Yasothon Rocket Festival is held every mid-May. It originated from a tradition every beginning of the rice-growing season of firing rockets into the sky to remind Phaya Thaen, King of the Sky, to send promised rain for a fruitful season. During the event, people compete for the longest rocket to stay aloft. Other highlights of the festival include decorated floats parading through town, fair, and music.
What to Do & Area Attractions
One of the most popular attractions in town is Wat Mahathat, a Buddhist temple taking pride in its Lao-style chedi. It also features a restored hor drai, a building where Tripitaka Buddhist scriptures are stored. The building is situated on stilts in a pond, protecting the scripture from termites. Tourists should also visit Toad Museum, a 19-meter tall infrastructure in the shape of a toad on the shore of Mae Nam Tuan. It was made to honor the Toad King, an important character in the myth behind the coveted rocket festival.
