The Washington Monument is both the tallest stone structure and the tallest obelisk in the world. It is a hollow Egyptian style stone obelisk on the National Mall in Washington D.C. The monument is visited by tourists and offers the best views of Washington D.C., Virginia and Maryland as one gets to the 500' level observation deck. Washington Monument was built to commemorate the first President and the once commander-in-chief of the continental army from the 13 colonies, George Washington. The number of visitors reached 1.1 million per year between 1979 and 1997 after which the restriction was placed.
