Tsumeb: Gateway to the North
Tsumeb, Namibia is the biggest city in Oshikoto. It used to be the site of a deep mine. Its name is believed to have come from a Nama word that means either “place of the moss” or “place of the frog”. Founded in 1905, it is often referred to as the country’s “gateway to the north”. The nearest airports are Mokuti Lodge Airport and Tsumeb Airport.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Tsumeb is during the months of April through July, for the perfect weather. The busiest months are usually April, August, and September. Tourists are least likely to visit in October.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Tourists should visit Etosha National Park when in the area. It was declared a game reserve in 1907 and a national park in 1967. It was named as such because of the Etosha pan covering 23% of the entire area. Over 300 bird species, over a hundred mammal species, over a hundred reptile species, 16 amphibian species, and a species of fish can be found in the park.
