Rabaul Airport – RAB

Also known as Tokua Airport, Rabaul Airport is a public airport owned by the government of Papua New Guinea. It can be found in the township of Rabaul, Papua New Guinea and currently serves the towns of Kokopo and Rabaul. The former Rabaul Airport was initially located at the foot of Tavurvur Volcano. However, it was severely damaged after the volcanic eruption in 1994. Its new location is now at Tokua, on the other side of Rabaul Volcano, although it was still affected by volcanic eruptions, especially in 2006 when it closed for a day. Rabaul Airport is known internationally by its IATA location identifier of RAB and ICAO location identifier of AYTK.

Best Time to Visit

The Rabaul Airport resides at an elevation of ten meters above the mean sea level. It currently has only one runway, known as 10/28 and spans to a length of 1,720 meters and a width of almost 30 meters. Three airlines, namely Air Niugini, PNG Air, and Travel Air, provide scheduled flights from Rabaul Airport to various points in Papua New Guinea. There are also available charter flights to Kavieng Airport offered by Hevilift. From Rabaul Airport, you can easily drive around the famous sites of Rabaul.

From Rabaul Airport, you can book a taxi going to the eastern side of the region where you can find Rapopo Plantation Resort and the Gazelle International Hotel. Both of these accommodations offer a refreshing view of the sea and is conveniently located 20 minutes from the airport.
