Niuatoputapu Airport – NTT

The Niuatoputapu Airport is a government-owned airport found in the village of Hihifo, which is on the southwestern side of the island of Niuatoputapu, Tonga

This public airport is currently operated by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and is also locally referred to as Mata'aho Airport. NiuatoputapuAiport is internationally known by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) code of NTT and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) code of NFTP. The airfield now serves the residents of the island of Niuatoputapu and its neighboring islets.

Best Time to Visit

The aerodrome is considered the primary gateway to the island via air. That was why when it was temporarily closed in 2009 due to the destructive Samoa earthquake that year, the rest of the country had difficulty providing relief to the island locals. Today, the airport features a small terminal made primarily of cinder blocks and a 4,000-feet runway made of the unsealed coral strip. The only airline currently serving Niuatoputapu is Real Tonga, which connects the island to Fuaʻamotu International Airport on the island of Tongatapu and Vavaʻu International Airport on the island group of Vava'u. From the airport, you can easily explore Niuatoputapu via taxis.

What to Do & Area Attractions

Although there are currently no accommodations available on Niuatoputapu, guests can stay at the island of Vava’u. Here, you can book your suites at the Mystic Sands, the 4-star Aganoa Lodge Samoa-All Inclusive, and Puataukanave International Hotel, all of which are within about 15 to 30 minutes' drive from the airport.
