Matanzas: City of Bridges
Matanzas, Cuba is the capital municipality of Matanzas. With 17 bridges crossing the three (3) rivers traversing it, it is dubbed as “City of Bridges”. It is also known for its culture and poets. As such, it is also dubbed as “La Atenas de Cuba”. The municipality has a rich Afro-Cuban heritage as well.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Matanzas is during the months of November through April. Peak tourist season is usually from December until February. People are least likely to visit in June. For 10 days following October 10 every year, locals celebrate the Festival del Bailador Rumbero. Primarily, it commemorates their rumba roots. It coincides with the founding anniversary of the municipality on October 12. Another event to look forward to is Carnaval of Santiago de Cuba, which is held every July to honor the Revolution. There is a huge parade on the last night of the carnival.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Palacio de Junco or Museo Histórico Provincial de Matanzas is one of the most famous attractions in the municipality. It was constructed in the early 19th century for the del Junco family. Today, it houses the provincial museum. The structure is a great example of 19th-century houses in the municipality. Another must-visit destination is Sauto Theater, which has been around since 1863. Its floor can be lifted, conveniently allowing the transformation of the auditorium into a ballroom. There are several Matanzas accommodation options offering the finest Cuban hospitality.
