East Kimberley Regional Airport – KNX Airport

East Kimberley Regional Airport is the airport’s official name and signpost, although it is locally referred to as Kununurra Airport. It is located in Kununurra, Western Australia, approximately 2.3 miles west of the town center. The Shire of Wyndham East-Kimberley owns the airport. It is served by several airlines with scheduled flights to different areas in Australia as well as charter airlines for seasonal routes.

KNX Airport recently underwent a major expansion, which cost AUD$8.68 million. It was completed and opened to the public in the year 2012. The construction resulted in doubling the size of the airport and included a dedicated arrivals hall complete with baggage carousel, a larger check-in area, improved security, and a larger departure lounge. Airlines that offer scheduled flights to and from KNX include Airnoth, Aviair, Virgin Australia, and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines. As of 2018, the airport has seen 77, 072 passengers and a total of 2,043 aircraft movements. Wyndham, Derby, and Halls Creek are towns that neighbor Kununurra. Residents from these towns also benefit from the services brought by KNX Airport.

Several hotels can be seen near the airport. The Discovery Parks –Lake Kununurra is a 4-star hotel that offers clean and chic rooms and has sprawling lawns that invite travelers to unwind and relax. The Kimberley Grande Resort is a more laid-back hotel with a pool and is a great place to stay when wanting to cool down near the Lily Creek Lagoon. Last, but not the least is the ibis Styles Kununurra. It boasts of a tropical holiday feel and has clean and simple rooms.
