The Albuquerque International Sunport, code ABQ, is a class C airport located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is a public international airport that caters to and is owned by the whole of Albuquerque. It is operated by the Albuquerque Aviation Department and hosts 13 passenger airlines and 4 cargo airlines. Back in 1930, two airports – Oxnard Field and West Mesa Airport, served Albuquerque. A proposal to be funded by the Works Progress Administration in 1935 suggested constructing a new airport enough for the whole city. Originally inaugurated as the Albuquerque Municipal Airport, it was eventually renamed Albuquerque International Sunport in 1963, following the arrival of several commercial airlines to the city. Albuquerque International Sunport also serves the Kirtland Air Force Base. From 1990 to 2018, the airport has seen a passenger flow from between 4 to 6 million a year. The airport has also seen its share of incidents, including a Boeing 727 hijacking in 1971.
