Tirupati Airport- TIR
The Tirupati Airport, found about 40 kilometers from the temple of Venkateswara, is an international airport owned and operated by the Airports Authority of India. The public airfield serves the city of Tirupati, India, in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Before declaring the airport as an international airport in June 2017, Tirupati Airport only offered domestic flights. Today, it handles more than 8,000,000 passengers and over 10,000 aircraft movements from April 2017 to March 2018. Its IATA code is TIR, while its ICAO code is VOTP.
Best Time to Visit
The aerodrome’s establishment dates back to 1976, but it wasn’t until 1993 when it received funding for improvements and renovation. The US$1.6 million project aimed to expand the runway and construct a new terminal building and radio tower. The newly upgraded airfield was then re-opened for commercial flights in 1999. Tirupati Airport’s new terminal, named Garuda Terminal, covers an area of 16,500 square meters and can accommodate 700 passengers. It boasts of 18 check-in-counters and four immigration counters. While you’re around Tiraputi, make sure to drop by the nearby town of Renigunta as well.
