Asau Airport – AAU
Located amid a dense jungle at the northwestern side of the island of Savai'i in Asau, Samoa, Asau Airport is a public domestic airport serving mainly chartered flights. Its IATA code is AAU, and its ICAO code is NSAU. Back in 2003, the airport suffered major damages after a cyclone hit the island group. It was shut down in 2006 for the renovations and installation of a new runway.
Best Time to Visit
The airport, standing at 26 feet above mean sea level, features a single roughly surfaced runway with no lights and watchtower. Because of this, the airport only operates for 12 hours every day. The Sky Watch Tower of Faleolo International Airport located on Upolu currently serves as Asau Airport’s watchtower. AAU can only accommodate Britten-Norman Islander and Twin Otter planes because of its narrow runway and small tarmac. The tarmac’s capacity is currently at two Twin Otter planes only, although there are other small sheds available in the airfield. From Asau, make sure you drop by the nearby town of Manase, about an hour's drive from the town center.

Being an island destination for the summer, the town of Asau is packed with a wide array of hotels and accommodations to suit every guest’s needs. Some of these accommodations can be easily found just outside of the airport. This includes the Vaimoana Seaside Lodge and Vaisala Hotel, both of which are located near the shore and offer a romantic view of Asau Bay.
